After completing his PhD in applied mathematics from Iowa State University, Al had a 32-year career at The Boeing Company, where, in the last 10 years, he led a 300-person  R&D Center for technology and mathematics, exploring pathways to innovation. He was selected as one of the 11 inaugural Senior Technical Fellows of The Boeing Company in 1990.  He as the co-founder and executive editor of Ethix magazine (www.ethix.org) where he has interviewed more than 100 world leaders on leadership and ethics in an age of technology.  Starting in 2001 after leaving Boeing, he taught graduate courses at Seattle Pacific University and founded the Center for Integrity in Business there.  He has been a speaker on business, technology, mathematics, and ethics on six continents, speaking with business and government leaders.  He has been on boards of multiple for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. In 2019 he was one of the keynote speakers for Grow Mongolia Ethics conference. He is the author of The Accidental Executive: Lessons on Business, Faith, and Calling from the Life of Joseph (2015); The ServiceMaster Story: Navigating Tension between People and Profit (2020); co-author of Direct Methods for Sparse Matrices (2017); and co-editor of The Purpose of Business: Contemporary Perspectives from Different Walks of Life (2015)
